Description:
Every night since birth we thank God for friends, family, health, jobs, classes, etc. We have signed the phrases and simultaneously spoke them every time, every night. Gradually he's increased the portion of the word he say (eg we built up to /f/ in Feb 2007 at 22 months old, then /fE/, then /fEz/ then /fEnz/ as each sound came in. Kaufman approach. In February he started saying a complete intelligible word of each when we sign it. Eg 'friends' or 'family'. In March he could start saying the words without signing the word (in other words, keeping signing separate from speaking vice versa). EG in this clip he can say 'ccc' or BINGO letters on own. Though, since the hallmark of apraxia is 'inconsistency', signing helps him when moments the words start getting jumbled. Signing helps his dysarthria as well, especially when he's tired. He now knows who can sign and who can speak (eg all his friends and family he's signed to before he'll keep signing and speaking, but to new people he'll be less communicative even when he warms up, not shy, though, just less verbal and less signing initially until he warms up to them); this phenomena is common to 3 year old bilinguals (eg ASL, English, Spanish, etc). He has the most success with extended communication with those who sign since his verbal skills are gradually increasing (due to apraxia and dyarthria). He also doesn't hear low tone sounds as well (30dB loss in low tones); words get lost in longer sentences or running speech due to the effects of coarticulation (sounds in running speech influence preceding or following sounds) so signing is extremely important. We are strong supporters of bilingualism of any language. It is estimated by experts that someone with 30dB loses half the conversation. And, these students fail grade levels, tune out, etc. In this clip signing and singing produces a lot of success...
