Vinita, OK. (tornadogenesis, Ottawa County)

Title:
Vinita, OK. (tornadogenesis, Ottawa County)

Description:
This was shot on April 9th, 2009, in Afton, Oklahoma. (Ottawa County) This video shows a nice evolution from an early wall cloud, into an elevated tornado. Actually, the local emergency management office reported a "definite tornado on the ground" and several reports did come in of damage, including a roof which was blown off of a barn; so it's likely that this tornado was making ground contact, even though it's not clear from the video. If you're looking for an exciting video of a tornado, look elsewhere or you will be disappointed. On the other hand, if you enjoy meteorology and storm-chasing, and are interested in tornado-genesis, this video shows some great development from start-to-finish. The elevated tornado is very well-defined at the end, before it "ropes-out". The chase team is David Toner, and myself, Jason Blum. I shot the video. Please excuse the occasional poor videography... but I was taking photos with two digital cameras at the same time I was operating the video camera. I also apologize for not having a wind screen on the video camera. After the funnel began forming, it became EXTREMELY windy though, so the howling wind is actually pretty representative of what we were hearing and feeling. In fact, some of the camera shake is due to the wind, because it was blowing so hard that I had difficulty steadying the camera at times.

Storm over Vinita, OK April 4th, 2009. Our first time storm chasing, got real lucky with positioning, happened to catch this guy trying to come down to our west. Not sure if it ever touched down, got locked in traffic after stupidly jumping onto the Will Rogers Turnpike to try and get back ahead of it. Sorry for the shaky camera work, we were a little excited.
2009 Stormchasing Season - First Quarter - Includes the April 9 Vinita, Oklahoma EF-0 Tornado!
The 2009 chase season, which marks the start of my second year in this dangerous, expensive, but rewarding hobby, didn't really start off well during the month of March and the first week of April. Nonetheless, we took a few opportunities to chase when work and a reasonable setup allowed us to do so, and all three of these chases were fun and productive. Although not visually pleasing due to the generally poor moisture return over the Plains during this portion of the season this year, we ...
