"In het Stedelijk Museum Schiedam exposeert Marcel Pinas Een van de elementen die in zijn werk voorkomt zijn de tekens van het Afaka-schrift. Marcel Pinas is een van de weinige die het schrift kent en de kennis doorgeeft. Dit schrift is ontstaan rond 1910 wanneer een Ndyuka bosneger, Afaka, een droom heeftwaarin een geest hem opdraagt een schrift t bedenken voor zijn stamgenoten die tot op dat moment analfabeet zijn. Afaja geeft gehoor aan de droom en hij ontwerpt in totaal 56 lettergreeptekens waarmee het mogelijk is alle Ndyuka woorden te schrijven."
