Minarchism: Ethically Self-contradictary

Title:
Minarchism: Ethically Self-contradictary

Description:
Taxation, land theft, coercive monopoly, death threats and forced exile of innocents. What do these things all have in common? (1) They involve the initiation of force or the threat thereof. (2) They are inherently required for a state to come into existance and maintain its existance. (3) They are all supported to one degree or another by minarchist libertarians who claim that the initiation of force or the threat thereof is wrong. Some of my favorite quotes!
Good quotes from various sources. Here they are: "Capitalism is essentially a system of mass production for the satisfaction of the needs of the masses. It pours a horn of plenty upon the common man. It has raised the average standard of living to a height never dreamed of in earlier ages. It has made accessible to millions of people enjoyments which a few generations ago were only within the reach of a small elite." - Ludwig von Mises "The worst evils which mankind has ever had to endure were inflicted by bad governments. The state can be and has often been in the course of history the main source of mischief and disaster." - Ludwig von Mises "All of the services commonly thought to require the State—from the coining of money to police protection to the development of law in defense of the rights of person and property—can be and have been supplied far more efficiently and certainly more morally by private persons. The State is in no sense required by the nature of man; quite the contrary." - Murray Rothbard " Taxation is theft, purely and simply, even though it is theft on a grand and colossal scale, which no acknowledged criminals could hope to match... Like the robber, the State demands money at the equivalent of gunpoint; if the taxpayer refuses to pay, his assets are seized by force, and if he should resist such depredation, he will be arrested or shot if he should continue to resist." - Murray Rothbard "Democracy is the pathetic belief in the wisdom of collective ignorance." - H. L. Mencken "When one gets in bed with government, one should expect the diseases it spreads." - Rep. Ron Paul "One of the most fashionable notions of our times is that social problems like poverty and oppression breed wars. Most wars, however, are started by well-fed people with time on their hands to dream up half-baked ideologies or grandiose ambitions, and to nurse real or imagined grievances." -Thomas Sowell "The principle, on which the [Civil War] was waged by the North, was simply this: That men may rightfully be compelled to submit to, and support, a government that they do not want; and that resistance, on their part, makes them traitors and criminals. No principle, that is possible to be named, can be more self-evidently false than this; or more self-evidently fatal to all political freedom." - Lysander Spooner "I saw in State Rights the only availing check upon the absolutism of the sovereign will, and secession filled me with hope, not as the destruction but as the redemption of Democracy... I mourn for the stake which was lost at Richmond more deeply than I rejoice over that which was saved at Waterloo." - Lord Acton "You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image when it turns out he hates all the same people you do." -Anne Lamont "Everyone carries a part of society on his shoulders; no one is relieved of his share of responsibility by others. And no one can find a safe way out for himself if society is sweeping towards destruction. Therefore, everyone, in his own interests, must thrust himself vigorously into the intellectual battle. None can stand aside with unconcern; the interests of everyone hang on the result. Whether he chooses or not, man is drawn into the great historical struggle, the decisive battle into which our epoch has plunged us." - Ludwig von Mises
Bill Richardson on Government and Rights
Can you properly delegate a right you do not have? Bill Richardson first says yes and then says no.
Democracy Is Impossible
In terms of the ideal of a government controled by "the people". Original blog: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=100400150&blogID=323092224&Mytoken=715C12FF-217B-4DA7-BFBDFC8FDE0034A341075987
Money Without Government
Joe has fish. Jack has wheat. Joe wants wheat, but Jack does not want Fish. Therefore, Joe is screwed by the limitations of direct exchange. But if both Joe and Jack can use a common medium of a exchange, let's say it's copper, then Joe can then give Jack some copper in exchange for the wheat. Once a society full of Joes and Jacks have generally agreed that copper has value as a medium of exchange (and realize, even subconciously, that it makes exchange much easier), copper becomes money. This is how money comes about. If there is a good that the bulk of society already makes common use of, and if it is durable and can easily be carried around and exchanged, it is a viable canidate for becoming money.
