A 37-year-old Chicago woman who led Crete police on a chase that exceeded speeds of 80 mph remained hospitalized Wednesday after losing control of her vehicle and crashing into a ditch, police said. The woman was driving a 1993 green Ford Explorer when a Crete police officer noticed she made an improper right turn while driving south at Illinois 394 and Richton Road Tuesday night, Police Chief Paul VanDeraa said. She then began weaving in and out of lanes, he said. The officer made a traffic stop about 11:30 p.m. and approached the woman, asking her to step out of the car. Instead, she drove south on Illinois 394 to Exchange Street where she went into a ditch. Managing to drive out of the ditch, the woman continued on at speeds of as high as 80 mph in a 50 mph lane, VanDeraa said. The vehicle then hit a guard rail at the S-curve entrance on Exchange Street, crossed over to the eastbound lanes and crashed into trees and bushes, forcing the car to roll on its side, VanDeraa said. The force from the crash threw the woman from the car, he said. She was airlifted to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The Crete Police Department is pursuing filing multiple charges including fleeing and attempting to allude a police officer and lane violations, VanDeraa said. FILMED BY TODD SHERMAN |
