![]() | The temple of Ramdevra (Rajasthan) Ramdeoji is a folk--deity of Rajasthan in India. He was a saint of the fifteenth century who devoted all his life to the uplift of the downtrodden. Around Ramdeoji's grave a magnificent temple was built by Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner in 1931 A.D. Ramdeoji was a Tomar Rajput. Hindus regard him as an incarnation of Lord Krishna, while Muslims venerate him as Ramshah Pir. He is said to have had miraculous powers and his fame reached far and wide. Legend goes that five Pirs (saints) from Mecca came here to test his power and after being convinced, paid their homage to him. Since then he is venerated by Muslims also as Ram Shah Pir or Rama Peer. Wooden toy horses covered with cloth are among the most popular offerings at the temple Baba Ramdev believed in the equality of all human beings, both high and low, rich and poor. He helped the down-trodden by granting them their wishes. Baba Ramdev is often depicted on horseback. His worship crosses the Hindu-Muslim divide as well as crossing the caste line since his followers include caste Hindus and the casteless (Dalits or Untouchables) in modern-day Rajasthan and Gujarat -and even further afield into Madhya Pradesh and Sind on the Pakistani side of the border. Several Rajasthani melas (fairs or festivals) celebrate his memory. VALPARD FILMS http://valpardfilms.free.fr |
![]() | Osian (Rajasthan) Osian (Osiyan) is an ancient town located in the Jodhpur District of Rajasthan state in western India. It is an oasis in the Thar Desert, 65 km north of the district headquarters at Jodhpur, on a diversion off the main Jodhpur -- Bikaner Highway. Osian is famous as home to the cluster of ruined Brahmanical and Jain temples dating from the 8th to 11th centuries. The city was a major religious centre of the kingdom of Marwar during the Pratihara dynasty. Of the 18 shrines in the group, the Surya or Sun Temple and the later Kali temple, Sachiya Mata Temple and the main Jain temple dedicated to Lord Mahavira stands out in their grace and architecture. The nearest airport is at Jodhpur. National Highway 11 passes through Osian. Osian Railway Station is situated on the Jodhpur -- Phalodi line of North Western Railway. Osian is a small village sixty-five kilometers north-east of Jodhpur. It is an important Jain pilgrimage center for Oswal Jain community. The (Mahavira, महावीर) Temple built here in A. D. 783 is an important tirtha for Jain built by Pratihara King Vatsa raja. The Jain Harivamsa Purana refers to Vatsa raja's rule in Saka year 705 (A. D. 783). He must have held sway over Upakesapura, i.e., Osian as an inscriptions of Vikram Samvat 1013 (A. D. 956) found from there refers to this place. In "Nabhinandana-jirnodhara Prabandha" -:Upakesapura has been described as the 'Svastika' (a mystical mark denoting good luck) of the earth, an ornament of the desert endowed with natural beauty where the groves are full of trees and the noble ascetics are wifeless (adara), but amongst the citizens none are like that; where the beautiful damsels and the peacocks educate each other without formal instructions merely by observing each other's graceful gait; where the tanks are replete with fully blossomed lotuses and the nocturnal darkness is dispelled by the light emanating from the luminous gems and where the rays of moon entering during the night through latticed windows in the houses of fair ladies, separated from their spouses, appear like the silver-arrows hurled by Cupid. Shorn of its usual literary exaggerations, the description does indicate that Osian was an important flourishing town then. The derivation of the cast name Oswal from Osian - the place name also sounds acceptable as it is a common practice in India to derive the family names from place names. ![]() | Jaisalmer - Part I Imagine you travel through a dry and waste land like the Thar desert during summertime and a temperature of 46 degrees Celsius and more......and suddenly a true oasis arises on the horizont with a huge fortress on a mountain! It is like a mirracle! That was my first impression of Jaisalmer. An oasis in the middle of nowhere! Jaisalmer is a sleepy place in the middle of nowhere, close to the Pakistani border right in the desert. Maybe this isolation is the reason why this magnificent place kept preserved like back in its hey-days. Yes, the fort on the hill is completely intact like back in the days. There only exist the old sandstone buildings, temples and the palace, protected by huge walls and strong gates. It is like going back with a time machine! There are plenty of possibilities to stay right inside the fort, with beautiful balconies and a great view over the desert. Stroll around through the narrow alleys with its beautifully decorated sandstone buildings! It is pure history! |
