The Phonetic Rap Yo

Title:
The Phonetic Rap Yo

Description:
This is my final project for my phonetics class...and my rap debut plus lyrics. I was sitting sippin coffee in caribou one day And I tried to think deep bout what I had to say So I grabbed me some paper and a pen too And this is how Ill describe phonetics to you On a hot august day as first class was adjournin I heard kitty martin say own you own learning Unsure what this meant, far as I could tell Id be teaching myself everyday til the bell After a while as classes got rollin I realized yo that its me whos controlling The reading the writing and memorizing My grades all about how much time Im comprizin So when I sat down to open my book My hand got a cramp all the notes that I took A phonemes a sound, a letters a grapheme When theyre up in a unit you call it a morpheme Next up on the list is a minimal pair An example of this would be share and care One thing you must know to learn bout this better Is the phonetic alphabet each sound is a letter Allophone, allograph and distinctive feature All kind of confused me had to ask the teacher Its the variant pronounciation and the sequences Difference in the sounds where in the mouth it frequences Next page read bout syllables onset n rhyme Coda n nucleus Id clap out in time Little did I know these were way more than this So I started studying up cuz I knew I couldnt miss Vowel is the nucleus the onset n codas Are usually a consonant like in the word sodas Open or closed are the way sullables be Just check that las letter like in cab n bee Moving right along started some anatomy Knew I had to learn it cuz of practicality Big muscle is the diaphragm tracheas windpipe OMG I hate this stuff but have no time to gripe The larynx houses vocal folds which adduct and abduct Phonation same as voicing is the vocal folds product The lips the teeth the palate and the alveolar ridge The velum glottis and the tongue are serving as a bridge Between the noise inside your throat and what you want to say Theyre articulators and theyre workin night and day Now Im past the basics and Im movin to the vowl Crazy quadrilateral made me want to throw the towel Retracting lips and rounding them, advancement and tongue height Are features of a vowel that will make you say them right A diphthong and a monophthong have to do with sound By two and one respectively are these vowels bound Theres 14 of em all in all and the go like this i for key, ay for say, /I/ for miss and kiss /ae/ for mad oooo for moon and an epsilon for red Uuuh for could /o/ for ok still crazy ones ahead The backwards c for law still confusing to this day But Im careful not to mix it up with simple little a Now heres some fun upside down v But nothings as crazy as that backwards upside down e! Finally whats up are two sounds that sound the same. Stressed and unstressed schwar if you call em by their name Now movin on page 108 I soon began to really hate Non-resonants vs. resonants All of them were consonants Stop fricative and affricate Oh man my mind just cant forget For all of these my nose is closed Each one my tongue a special pose Now comin to the resonant Explainin I aint hesitant From the nasal liquid and the glide My nasal cavity cant hide Manner place and voicing were a big priority Air flow, place and vocal folds claim authority Over how you say the sound and whether its correct And if the word your thinking of comes out as you expect Citation vs. connected speech is up in ch. 6 If you talk in all citation then you better get it fix Connected speech is human talk the other I dont know If you talk all day citation form it. would. be. A. show. Reason for the differences is called assimilation Overlappin ticulators: coarticulation Because of this as it goes some mistakes are made Listen what I say and dont you let if fade Elision and epenthesis metathesis too Are omission and addition and transposition foo! Timing stress and intonation suprasegmentals Theyre what make your message sound hard mean or gentle Now the last thing Ill cover is couple of disorder My apology my song isnt shorter Between phonological and articulation To learn a lot about ems gonna take some concentration Weak syllable final consonant some people delete em Is mostly helps em out if you just keep repeatin Re-re-reduplication can be tough While cluster reduction it aint enough All righty folks its been my pleasure Give you this phonetics treasure Hope you learned enough today to take that test and earn an A.

Pocoyo Narration (TEFL resource)
LESSON PLAN FOR ENGLISH TEACHERS An exercise suitable for Spanish speaking kids or adults (yes adults!) which involves translation, pronunciation, intonation and listening. Suitable for any level of English. What better than Stephen Fry narrating a children's TV show as a model for intonation? Using L1 in the classroom is often frowned upon but I think there is a lot of value in comparing the intonation of both languages used in the same context. Part One: Depending on level choose either (a ...
