Last year I went on a trip to Varadero and Havana with my girlfriend Danielle.
We decided to go the all inclusive route as it was our first trip to Cuba; The resort was the least impressive part of the vacation “I will just leave it at that”.
I think we had the most fun touring around Varadero and Havana, we found a great little bar that served $2 mojitos by our hotel. It was quiet during the day and had live music almost every night, the adjacent streets acting as a dance floor for 50 to 100 locals and tourists. We made it out to a few nightclubs The Cave and another one called Pirates cove was pretty busy. All liquor and beer is included with cover charge in most Varadero nightclubs, making a night out light on the wallet.
Half way through our trip we decided to take the bus to Havana for the day,
arriving in Havana was like taking a trip back in time. The architecture mirrors its rich history and most of the shops and restaurants look like they have not changed in 200 years. Danielle and I got so caught up in sightseeing that we missed our bus back to Varadero. After much haggling with cabbies looking to cash in on a overpriced fare we found a lovely couple that took us back for 70 convertibles in a rehashed Lada with a lawn chair for a front seat.
I would recommend Cuba as an affordable destination for anyone looking at getting away and experiencing a beautiful country rich with cultural heritage.
