Before the long weekend arrived several of my friends and family asked me what my plans were. They were shocked to find out that I had none. I'm sure most Torontonians had plans to get away for the weekend, either to go visit family and friends in the states, or travel to their cottage. I stayed here and found that my weekend was filled with activites.
The Dyke march was on Saturday and travelled north along Church from Hayden st. to Bloor, then west on Bloor to Yonge, and then south along Yonge to Wood St., from there they headed east back to Church where the parade finished. On that day Church street was blocked off North of College and was packed full of people enjoying the celebrations and great weather.
The Pride Parade on Sunday was a slightly longer route than the Dyke march the day before. It started off at Church and Bloor where people headed west to Yonge, and then south on Yonge to Gerrard, from there the parade headed east back to Church. The Pride Parade in Toronto is known world wide and is ranked 5th out of 15 of the best parades worldwide. (read about it here). As I'm sure all of you know, the Euro cup finals was on this weekend, and Spain was the winner. Thanks to Adidas, Yonge and Dundas Square was set up with a large screen and seating so that people could watch the game out in the nice weather and cheer on their favorite team. There were a lot of people there wearing jerseys and carrying flags for both teams. I unknowingly sat in the area where most of the Germany fans were, so I felt a little left out when I cheered for Spain. There was a small soccer field set up for children to play in while their parents watched the game. What I thought was going to be a boring weekend turned out to be a weekend full of fun. I hope your Canada day long weekend was as fun as mine, and for those in the states celebrating Independence day this Friday, have a great long weekend!
