reading one of my favourite travel websites (besides TripAtlas.com, of course) - and found this article on "10 Extreme Cases of Travelers Imprisoned Abroad" on BraveNewTraveler.com.

it just beats home the idea that you really need to be culturally sensitive when you're traveling - and of course, to not propogate any illegal activity so that you don't end up in jail when you're traveling.

it always reminds me of that bridget jones movie - she takes a statue for her friend in her luggage - which is actually filled with coke. and then there's that terrible scene in prison and "like a virgin." shudder.

in any case - this whole issue also reminds me of this story, of James from Univ of Cali/Berkeley who was in Egypt at a protest, and got arrested. he TWITTERED from his cell phone: "arrested."  his friends got notice through twitter - and lo and behold, james was able to get out of jail. james is now working with twitter to set up a "global human rights network."

moral of the story? don't carry luggage for people and join Twitter.com.
