ZOSKALES
(Redirected from Zoscales)
'Zoskales', also 'Ze-Hakèlé' (c.100) was a king whose realm included Axum.
According to the ''Periplus of the Erythraean Sea'', besides ruling in Axum in the mountainous Abyssinia, he also held under his sway two habours on the Red Sea: Adulis (near Massawa) and Avalites (Assab). He is described in the Periplus:
Some scholars have identified him with 'Za Haqala', who is included in the King Lists of Ethiopia. G.W.B. Huntingford points out, on the other hand, that there is not enough information to be certain of this identification, and argues instead that Zoskales was a petty king whose power was limited to only Adulis.1
