Wheelock's 'Latin', officially titled ''Latin'', is a comprehensive, beginning
Latin textbook. Chapters introduce related grammatical topics and assume little or no prior knowledge of
grammar and language. At the end of each chapter are a collection of translation exercises created specifically for the book or taken directly from ancient sources. Those coming from the ancients (called
"Sententiae Antiquae" -- lit., "old sentences or statements") may be either direct quotes or may be a paraphrase from the original document. Also interspersed in the text are introductions to Ancient Roman culture.
