WESTERN DESERT (NORTH AFRICA)

The 'Western Desert' is a desert region West of the Nile in Egypt, extending to Libya. In most of Upper Egypt, the desert encroaches very near the Nile, with a flood plain only a few kilometers wide.
It contains the Great Sand Sea and several oases, including Siwa, Farafra, Baharia, Dakhla, and Kharga. Within the greater Western Desert, there lies the White Desert, named for the numerous white rock formations created by erosion (creating numerous anthromorphic creatures), and the Black Desert, so called because of the great pyramid-like mounds covered by black rocks.
It stretches to 600,000km² and 90% of Egypt is the Western, Eastern and Sahara Desert.
