Elimination Rounds

In the first round each team in a group played each other team in the same group. The placings were determined on points. If the points were equal, then the better goal average decided. The first two teams of each group were qualified for the semi-finals, while the third and fourth placed team was eliminated.

Semi-finals

Like in the elimination round each team in a group played each other team in the same group unless they had met in the previous round. In this case the previous result stood and was carried forward to this group. So in each group only four matches had to be played. The placings were determined on points. If the points were equal, then the better goal average decided. The first two teams of each group were qualified for the final round, while the third and fourth placed team were eliminated and took part in a consolation tournament.
The results which are carried forward from the first round are shown in ''italics''.

Editors note: It is uncertain, why Hungary won the tournament and not Germany. Hungary had a goal average 10:2 (+8) and Germany had 14:4 (+10). The official report says (page 938) after the 2:2 draw: "After that Hungary beat France 4 to 0. Germany beat Belgium 4 to 1. The total of 10 to 2 gave the victory to Hungary against Germany's 14 to 4." (Unfortunately the wrong score is shown for the match Hungary beat France by 5 to 0). Maybe only the goal average from the final games counted, so Hungary won 5 to 0 against France and Germany only 4 to 1 against Belgium. But according to all the results of this tournament maybe Belgium was the stronger opponent then France. Or maybe the goal average from the whole tournament counted, then Hungary had 44:4 (+40) and Germany had 40:8 (+32). However the rules for the tiebreaker are unknown to me.
