Washington National Cathedral videos

Washington National Cathedral
This music video is comprised of photographs taken by me in and around the Washington National Cathedral in Washington D.C. Even for a late February day, the cloudless sky made the light inside the cathedral absolutely fantastic!
Washington National Cathedral Organ
This was taken Dec. 31, 2006 as the organist for the Washington National Cathedral was rehearsing on the 1938 Skinner for the postlude for the National Funeral for President Gerald Ford. The organist was rehearsing Pièce Héroïque by Franck.

Washington National Cathedral Pipe Organ Conte Soliloquy
The last (in all likelihood) Independence Day Concert on this grand instrument. Former cathedral organist Douglas Major began the tradition of playing American concert music on the 4th of July over 20 years ago. My apologies to the current cathedral organists -- my notes are confused on which organist performed this piece: Scott Dettra or Christopher Jacobson. The cathedral thoughtfully provides large flat-panel TV screens hat lets the audience see the organ console, but I was sitting out of range of them. David Conte is a professor @ the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has published over 70 works in various genres.
Barber Adagio at Washington National Cathedral Pipe Organ
Probably the last Independence Day concert on this glorious instrument. It's being replaced with... something else. Samuel Barber's Adagio is a perfect piece to display the incomparable strings of Ernest Skinner. When I uploaded this before, I attributed the performance to the wrong cathedral organist, so here's the re-edited version to give proper credit to Mr. Dettra.

Amazing Grace Washington National Cathedral Pipe Organ
William Bolcom's supremely inventive version of this old chestnut. The first 2 minutes will KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF !! The complete piece clocks in at around 15 minutes -- too long for YouTube. So I had to make a couple of judicious cuts. Hopefully, they're not too obvious. Bolcom has served on the faculty at the Univ. of Michigan for many years, & is a prolific composer in a number of genres. His 12 Gospel Preludes were published in 4 Books over several years. The grand old instrument is a IV/189 Skinner with many modifications/additions over the years -- all soon to be removed for something..... completely different.
Hymn at Washington National Cathedral
The opening hymn at the Sunday morning service at the National Cathedral in D.C. on "Indiana Day", June 15, 2008. I recorded the sound from where I sat during the service in the south transcept. The pictures I also took before and after the service. The choir pictured in red is a high school choir from Vigo County in Indiana in which my partner's neice from Terre Haute sang. The presider, whose voice you hear after the hymn, is the Episcopal Bishop of Indianapolis, The Rt. Rev. Catherine Waynick. The first verse of the hymn: The God of Abraham praise Who reigns enthroned above, Ancient of everlasting days, And God of love; The Lord, the Great I AM, by earth and heaven confessed; We bow and bless the sacred Name for ever blest.
