'Umuahia' is the capital city of
Abia State in south eastern
Nigeria; population 147,167
[1]. Slogan: 'Spring of Synergy'
One of its prominent son's is Dr.
Michael Iheonukara Okpara, the former premier of
Eastern Region of Nigeria.
Major-General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi the first Nigerian GOC and military
Head of state is from the town. Mr. Lambert Ndukwe who was one of the richest men in Nigeria in the 50's is from the area of Abia state called Elugwunta Obayi Ovim, Isuikwuato. Mr Lambert was known for stock fish importation from Norway and cotton exportation to Europe. Mr Stephen Ama Achilefu, the first personnel manager of Nigerian airways, who was assassinated in 1967, during the Biafran war, is also from Umuahia.
History
Umuahia became the first industrial city in
Igboland during the First Republic.
It was declared the second capital of the short-lived nation of the
Republic of Biafra on 28 September
1967 after the first capital
Enugu was captured by Nigerian troops; after it was captured in turn on 22 April
1969, the last Biafran capital became
Owerri.
