USS PETREL

Four ships in the United States Navy have been named 'USS ''Petrel''' for the sea bird of the same name.

★ The first ''Petrel'' was a schooner purchased in 1846 and later served in the Coastal Survey.

★ The second ''Petrel'' was a steamship, purchased in 1862 and captured in 1864.

★ The third ''Petrel'' (PG-2) was a gunboat, commissioned in 1889 and decommissioned in 1919.

★ The fourth ''Petrel'' (ASR-14) was a ''Chanticleer''-class Submarine Rescue Ship, commissioned on 24 September 1946 and decommissioned on 30 September 1991.
