'Twyford School' is a
preparatory school located in the village of
Twyford,
Hampshire. It claims to be the oldest preparatory school in the
United Kingdom.
[1]
The school was moved to the present site in
1809, however there has been a school for boys in Twyford since the seventeenth century.
[2] The original buildings are still in use and form an integral part of the modern day campus. During the nineteenth century additional buildings were added. These included a large schoolroom built during the 1820s and a mid-
Victorian chapel.
For most of its history the school has only accepted boys as pupils. At the end of the twentieth century this tradition was reversed, and today the school is
co-educational. Being a private establishment the school is a registered charity. The school accepts both day pupils and borders. There is a pre-prep school located on the same campus for children below the age of five.
Current status
A major series of developments coincided with the admission of girls to the school and have continued in recent years. A series of building works and improvements have been undertaken, although the historic buildings have generally being retained. In addition the sports grounds and other outdoor facilities have been greatly upgraded. The school has capacity for around 300 pupils between the ages of three and 13, with borders being accepted from the age of eight. The school is a
Church of England Christian school, and the Victorian chapel is still used for services. The current Headmaster is Dr. David Livingstone.
