World War 2

During the German occupation of Norway (1940-1945) the Germans had an anti-aircraft school at Tromøy (Feld Flakartillerie-schule) from 1941-1944 at Hove camp. The camp was built for 1500 men. There were 3 radars at the island and supposedly four 88mm anti-aircraft cannons. There was an airstrip build that never was finished, approx 200 m long. Most of the buildings and the airstrip are still there today, also a bunker (R618) with an unknown purpose. The bunker is currently under restorations (2007) but work has been halted out of a ownership dispute. The Germans military used 75 buildings at the area, most of them was built during the war.

Dining

Arendal Catering is located at Hove Camp (Hove Leirsenter). Bjellandstrand Gård has a farm restaurant with exclusive dishes, and at Arendal Herregaard Hotel (close to Hove Camp) there's a fine restaurant. There is only one gas station at the island, it serves some fast food.
