A 'treacle tart' is a traditional
British dessert with a rich,
sugary filling in a
pastry casing, traditionally with a lattice of pastry strips on top. The name is perhaps misleading in that it is not made with treacle (otherwise known as
molasses) but with a mixture of
golden syrup and
breadcrumbs. Many recipes also add the juice and zest of a
lemon to the filling.
A treacle tart is normally eaten steaming hot, with
custard or
ice cream.
