TOTORA (PLANT)

Uros harvesting Totora on Lake Titicaca

'Totora' (''Schoenoplectus californicus'' ssp. ''tatora'', also known as ''S. totora'' or ''S. tatora'') is a family of sedges closely related to ''Scirpus''. It is found in South America, notably on Lake Titicaca, and on Easter island in the Pacific Ocean.
The Uros, an indigenous people predating the Incas, live on Lake Titicaca upon floating islands fashioned from this plant. The Uros also use the Totora plant to make boats (''balsas mats'') of the bundled dried plant reeds.[1]
The Rapanui people of Easter island used Totora reeds for thatching and to make ''pora'' swimming aids.
