TOKI CLAN

The was a powerful clan that ruled in Japan from the Kamakura Period to the Edo Period. It descended from a clan of Seiwa Genji, who was a direct descendent of Emperor Seiwa. From the Muromachi Period to the Warring States period, the Toki clan was the protector of Mino Province. At its greatest power, it controlled three provinces: Mino, Owari and Ise.[1]
The family used Toki, Gifu Prefecture as their hometown[2] and adhered to Zen Buddhist beliefs and founded many temples, including Shōbō-ji Temple in Gifu, which contains the Gifu Great Buddha.
