'Titanium aluminide', TiAl, is an
intermetallic chemical compound.
It is lightweight oxidation and very heat resistant, however it suffers from its low ductility. The density of gamma titanium aluminide is about 4.5g/cm³.
Titanium aluminide has three major phases: gamma-TiAl, alpha2-Ti
3Al and TiAl
3. Among the three, the first two phases are with most interest. Both gamma-TiAl and alpha2 Ti
3Al have excellent mechamical properties at high temperature (over 700 degree celsius), which made them possible to replace traditional Ni based superalloy for jet engine turbine blades.
