Mid-Illini Conference Track Meet 1600m 1985
This race became pivotal in the media after the fact. In 1985 the Mid-Illini decided that dual meets would count toward the conference crown in addition to the conference meet. This meant Morton had an edge as they were undefeated in duals. We needed to win the conference meet and another school besides Morton had to get second for IVC to win the conference. We won the meet. Morton got second, Washington third. Morton won the conference. In this 1600 race, Brian Swords of Metamora won (4:32.4), I got second and George Patterson (So.) of Washington got third. Had I let George beat me, that would have given Washington enough of a points edge to get second in the meet and would have allowed IVC to gain the title. It was a flawed system that was later changed. Track had what every other sport needs but doesn't have time for, a year end playoff for the conference championship. Palmer of East Peoria was 4th, Dan Johnson (Sr.) of IVC was 5th, and future state champion Mark Scheier (Fr.) Metamora was 6th. Side note, I ran next to Washington's Dave Nordhielm for part of the 1st and 2nd laps. He is now the unofficial guru of running in Central Illinois.
Dr. Joel C. Hunter-Third Way Press Event
At a press conference on October 10, 2007, Third Way released a paper that for the first time charts a way for progressives and Evangelicals to bridge the divide on some of the most polarizing cultural issues of the day (www.third-way.com). In seeking common ground on matters ranging from abortion to gay and lesbian issues to religion in the public square, the paper, titled "Come Let Us Reason Together: A Fresh Look at Shared Cultural Values between Evangelicals and Progressives," offers what its authors and supporters are calling "the beginning of the end of the culture wars." The Washington press conference, co-hosted by Faith in Public Life, brought together several national progressive and Evangelical leaders, including Dr. Joel C. Hunter, senior pastor of Northland, A Church Distributed, a congregation of 12,000 that worships throughout Central Florida and online via Webstream Worship at www.northlandchurch.net.

AFSCME Conference
Some clips from the 2007 AFSCME Leadership Conference in Washington DC. I gave a speech and then participated in a forum moderated by Donna Brazile. The day after I spoke the presidential candidates all participated in a forum moderated by Chris Matthews. I was able to go back stage and meet candidates which was a really cool experience! The person who went with me followed me around with my camera that day and played documentary journalist, lol. Most of the time the camera was on me I didn't know. I threw a few clips together quickly, so it isn't the best editing, but here it is. ;-) Check out AFSCME at: http://www.afscme.org/ The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) is the second- or third-largest labor union in the United States and one of the fastest-growing, representing over 1.4 million employees, primarily in local and state government and in the health care industry. AFSCME is part of the AFL-CIO, one of the two main labor federations in the United States.
