Whip-poor-will Willow Creek, HUM County, CA
20 June 2007. This isn't really a video, but more of audio recording of the bird. This bird has supposedly been present in this location for about a month. I and another friend had the opportunity to go confirm the bird. This is the first record for Northwestern California and is the farthest northern record for California. This the mexican subspecies, arizonae, which has (or does) breed in very small numbers in certain localities in Southern California.
Whippoorwill Hill - Act I
Part 1 of 3 What happens when 6 friends spend a few days at a remote cabin in the woods with plenty of booze and a video camera? They display their horribly pathetic acting skills in a poorly scripted slasher flick! Hilarity ensues. Act II: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOAFK0HjwUg Act III: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kEJFsT3nuc Filmed and edited in 2005. (This was actually my first ever attempt at video editing.)
Thundering Toms II
It's spring and as the sun appears on the horizon, the Whippoorwills are the first to awaken, and then the lonesome morning doves can be heard throughout the woods. Just prior to sunup, as darkness turns to daylight a Barred Owl starts his "Who cooks for you" call. Then it happens! The thundering gobble of a big Tom brings the entire woods to life. These are just a few of the things you'll hear and see on Thundering Toms II, with over an hour of spring turkey hunting for Merriam's, Eastern and Rio Grande turkeys in five upper Midwestern states. "Look for the Silver Lining" (Connee Boswell)
Connee Boswell at the peak of her career in this upbeat and positive-minded number from Jerome Kern and Buddy DeSylva's 1920 show, "Sally". LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING Look for the silver lining When e'er a cloud appears in the blue. Remember some where the sun is shining, And so the right thing to do, Is make it shine for you. A heart, full of joy and gladness, Will always banish sadness and strife. So always look for the silver lining, And try to find the sunny side of life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More from Wiki on the show, "Sally", in which the song first appeared: Sally is a musical comedy with music by Jerome Kern, lyrics by Clifford Grey and book by Guy Bolton (inspired by the 19th century show, Sally in our Alley), with additional lyrics by Buddy De Sylva, Anne Caldwell and P. G. Wodehouse. It was originally produced by Florenz Ziegfeld, opening on December 21, 1920 at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway. It ran for 570 performances, which was one of the longest runs on Broadway up to that time. By the time it closed in 1924, it would prove to be among the top five money makers of the 1920s. The show was designed as the musical comedy debut of Marilyn Miller, a 22-year old Ziegfeld Follies girl. Miller would continue to be a star on Broadway until her untimely death in 1936. Kern, Bolton, and Wodehouse had collaborated on a number of musical comedies at the Princess Theatre. The story combined the innocence of these earlier "Princess musicals" with the lavishness of the "Follies" formula. The score recycles some material from previous Kern shows, including "Look for the Silver Lining" and "Whip-poor-will" (with lyrics by De Sylva, from the flop "Zip Goes a Million"); "The Lorelei" (lyrics by Anne Caldwell); and "You Can't Keep a Good Girl Down" and "The Church 'Round the Comer" (lyrics by Wodehouse). Grey supplied the lyrics for the few new songs in the score. At the request of Ziegfeld, Victor Herbert was engaged to write the music to "The Butterfly Ballet" in Act Three. The plot hinges on a mistaken-identity: Sally, a waif, is a dishwasher at the Alley Inn. She poses as a famous foreign ballerina and rises to fame (and finds love) through joining the Ziegfeld Follies. There is a rags to riches story, a ballet as a centrepiece, and a wedding as a finale. A 1929 film version of Sally was made, with a screenplay was by Waldemar Young.
