 | Space Earth Observation Industry for Addressing the Mass Market Initiated by... Google Tech Talks February, 7 2008 ABSTRACT Google Earth is at the forefront of providing the world with detailed ground imagery. A recent study by the French Space Agency (CNES) has created a set of specifications for the next step in satisfying world demand for imagery: resolution of 1-2 meters, latency 2-3 days, all over the land masses. This capability requires 60-80 satellites each carrying a 40 cm diameter camera. Building such a system, as a stand-alone project, is clearly unaffordable. A chance to realize such a system is offered by IRIDIUM-NEXT whose specifications are compatible with the needs of the imagery market, and could be deployed in 2013-2015. This commercial opportunity could by complement by deploying scientific instruments devoted to environmental monitoring and using the same spacecraft and data links. Decisions for IRIDIUM-NEXT have to be made by the system developer, Iridium Satellite LLC in mid 2008. Now is the time to engage in discussions among potential participants to offer an attractive technical and business plan to Iridium Satellite LLC. My presentation will discuss this opportunity to move Google to the next level of service. He was instrumental in creating the French space agency, the French National Center for Space Studies or CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales). In 1962, at the creation of CNES, he was appointed technical director. In 1972 he became chief scientist and adviser to the director general of CNES. Involved in atmospheric research, Prof. Blamont discovered the interstellar wind in 1970. He was the author of the first measurements of atmospheric temperature from 100 to 500 km. He made the first measurements of Einstein's general relativity red shift of the Sun. He discovered the hydrogen envelope of comets. Blamont was a member of the Science Steering Groups on the NASA missions Voyager, Pioneer-Venus, and of the USSR balloon mission Vega to Venus and Halley's comet; and a prime investigator on the Soviet Union's Phobos mission. He was a major contributor to the Lunar mission Clementine by the US Department of Defence and, in 1994. He developed image data compression for this mission, multiplying the number of lunar images obtained by 7 (2 million images). Among his honors are the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement, 1972, and Gagarin Medal of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, 1985. He received the Spie Prize (International Society for Optical Engineering) for his space technology achievements.  | Oil Wars: Chinese Corp. pt.1/5 Current situation and future plans: China's oil relationship with other countries has shifted from a world exporter to a world importer. This shift to dependence on foreign oil has changed the exploration and acquisition policies of China. China's oil need overwhelms its internal capabilities. Oil acquisition is now a process of investment in foreign lands and a creation of an internal oil reserve in case of emergency. China has taken steps to alter its security polices in places in the world that are rich in oil. China National Petroleum Corporation is invested in producing, marketing, and supplying oil in China. This company supports internal sources of oil production and reserves. Domestic oil production supplies only two thirds of the countries oil needs and it is estimated that China will require 600 million tons of crude oil by 2020. This statistic is horrifying considering that most of the oil fields in the world are already claimed. It is a statistic that has required China to take drastic measures with its internal oil reserve programs. A purely importation driven oil plan would leave China vulnerable to market fluctuations and more susceptible to international oil conflicts due to their dependence. To combat this dangerous position of foreign dependence China is investing in its first national oil reserve bases a program beginning in 2004. There are three different providences that they are focusing on. The first Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, was build by Sinopec, China's largest oil refining company. The storage space is 5.2 million cubic meters says the National Development and Reform Commission. Zhejiang was originally a commercial oil transfer base. Its costal position makes it convenient and at the same time vulnerable to offshore violence. The next reserve of interest In Huangdao or Qingdao, Shangdong Province and the final Dalian, Liaoning Province. All of these reserves are costal and with their creation comes an analysis of how vulnerable they are to Eastern Asian countries possible attacks. These stock piling strategies as well as international acquisition companies are state run companies to combat supply disruption. In 1993 after China became a net importer of oil. It was presented that these stockpiling sites would be filled with domestic oil yet this assumption has not been yet fulfilled these stock piles of acquired oil are attempting to create a reserve for 90 days of oil. This is the security break through that China would highly value to protect them from market fluctuations and their dependence on imports. The FPSO (floating production, storage and off-loading system) has equipment capable of handling 65,000 bbl of oil and 300,000 bbl of total fluids per day and it would be loaded and shipped by shuttle tankers. Software giant Microsoft was backhanded by the European Commission today with a fine of 899 million Euros, or $1.35 BILLION dollars. The fine was punishment for using their high prices to discourage competition, and is part of their on-going anti-trust litigation, which Microsoft didnt seem to think was that serious. That brings their current European union fine total up to 2.5 billion dollars for abusing the dominance of PC operating system WINDOWS, the largest ever for any company in history. And, Microsoft's problems don't stop there, two new investigations were opened last month and more fines could be levied unless they clean up their act. But, given the prospect of a Yahoo and Microsoft merger, I don't think losing the money really bothers them. Did anyone else notice the mystery Starbucks closing time yesterday? No? Not a fan? Well to millions of Starbucks customers, it might have been an inconvenience, but Starbucks hopes it was worth it. The company closed its coffee shops three hours early yesterday to retrain its employees on how to make a proper espresso. All stores now proclaim "Your drink should be perfect, every time." Starbucks made the move to do a mass training because their once booming stock has fallen 50 percent since late 2006, with many customers complaining of falling quality standards. And, the world's leading coffee shop said they are committed to turning that around. Stores are now open for regular business and Starbucks will continue with more training throughout the month. With the Dow hitting record after record, it wasn't surprising Thursday to see the bulls take a bit of a breather. A late day resurgence in buying activity did briefly lift the blue-chip indices into the green, with the Dow surpassing 13,500 for the first time ever However, sellers eventually got the last laugh as their efforts, albeit unimpressive, were just enough to take some froth out of a market that looks ripe for an even more convincing pullback with long-term optimism still overpowering the fundamentals. Among the main catalysts arming the bears with enough to stall the underlying bullish momentum that has vaulted stocks virtually uncontested for several weeks was mixed economic data and soaring oil prices. Before the bell, initial claims unexpectedly fell 5K to 293K That was the lowest level since mid January and consistent with tight labor conditions. However, with high levels of resource utilization still a main concern among policy makers, the data actually removed some of the optimism toward the Fed easing later in the year. At 12:00 ET, the Philadelphia Fed index checked in at a four-month high. While the May reading of 4.2 didn't translate to a strong growth path, it did signal a slight improvement after three consecutive sub 1 readings. Nonetheless, with the market now viewing improvements in economic growth to imply the Fed will merely remain on hold, the data also sidelined overly optimistic rate-cut scenarios. Fed Chairman Bernanke also chimed in with some remarks. He said the Fed sees no significant spillovers from the subprime market to the rest of the economy or to the financial system; but he also noted that subprime lending curbs will restrain housing. Surging oil prices also acted as a headwind for the bulls. Renewed optimism surrounding the Energy sector's earnings potential given higher energy prices initially gave a sluggish market lacking leadership anywhere else a decent lift. Of the eight sector's trading lower, Utilities and Health Care paced the way lower with modest declines of 0.5% and 0.4%, respectively, while Energy surged 1.3%. When it was all said and done, though, oil's up tick and the commodity's potential to sustain inflation pressures eventually fed into the diminishing likelihood of a Fed easing in the near term.
