![]() | War heroes advancing after capture of Michael Base War heroes of the 59th Division, who captured the Michael Base of the LTTE within the Mullaitivu forests, are advancing towards the North. Our Special Representative Anura Dorakumbura reporting from the battlefront said the troops are removing land mines and booby traps laid in the environs of Michael Base. The brave soldiers captured Michael Base which comes under the One Four Base Complex in the Mullaitivu jungles. Michael Base is a strong underground camp consisting of bunkers. He observed that the area was entrenched and fortified to hamper the forward march of the troops. The troops liberated the area overcoming all obstructions. Michael Base, a well known camp, was built 18 years ago. It is a location where LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and Anton Balasingham had put up. The LTTE leader had sought shelter in this camp during the "Operation Lightening" in 1991, "Rivi Resa" in 1995 December and "Sath Jaya" in December 1996. The LTTE has maintained this area as a High Security Zone. It was clear that the security forces were able to achieve such victories due to the commitment of the brave soldiers. The troops were confident that they would capture the entire complex despite the obstructions. Meanwhile, civilians in Talaimannar are urging the Government to soon liberate the North from the terrorists. They said the people of Mannar now live without fear and suspicion after the liberation of the District. Our special representative Suneth Hewawitharana reporting from Talaimannar said civilians are arriving in large numbers from the LTTE dominated areas to Government controlled areas. Four families comprising 13 members reached the Pallimunai Naval Camp in Mannar this morning. He said they left the areas as the LTTE was abducting them for terrorist operations. The people have said the security forces had reached Vedithaltivu and they will return to their native places after the troops liberate the area. |
