The 'Tōkai region' (東海, literally ''East Sea'') is a subregion of
Chūbu,
Kantō and
Kansai,
Japan along the
Pacific Ocean. The name comes from
Tōkaidō, one of the
Edo Five Routes.
The
prefectures consisting the Tōkai region are unfixed.
From the geographic point of view, they are
Shizuoka,
Aichi, '
Mie' (
Kansai region,関西地方) and the southern part of
Gifu, but, there is a case including '
Tokyo and
Yokohama' (
Kantō region,関東地方) in Tōkai region.
The economic tie between 'Aichi, Gifu and Mie' (
Chūkyō region,中京地方) is considerably strong.
