'Suruga' (駿河国; -no kuni) was an old province in the area that is today the eastern part of Shizuoka prefecture. Suruga bordered on Izu, Kai, Sagami, Shinano, and Totomi provinces; and had access to the Pacific Ocean through Suruga Bay.
The ancient capital was near the modern Shizuoka city, which was the most important town in the feudal period as well. The province was ruled by the Imagawa clan for much of the Sengoku period. After Imagawa Yoshimoto was defeated by Oda Nobunaga, though, the Imagawa were crushed and the province taken by Takeda Shingen. In turn, Tokugawa Ieyasu assigned the province to one of his allies.
