SUPREME MUSLIM COUNCIL
The 'Supreme Muslim Council' (SMC) was the highest body in charge of Muslim community affairs in Palestine under British control. It controlled the Waqf funds, the orphan funds, and the Shariah courts (responsible for appointing teachers and preachers).
Created by the British in 1922 to balance the Zionist movement, it arranged for Amin al-Husayni to be elected as president of the council, a position he held until 1937 [1].
The SMC was dissolved in 1948 when Jordan occupied Jerusalem. It was reconstituted in Jerusalem after the Six-Day War in 1967.
