 | Blackthorn - Blackthorn Winter Blackthorn is a Russian all female symphonic,black metal,dramatic and melodic metal band that was formed on October 31, 2004 in Russian Federation. The band consists of Aina (vocals and songwriter), Verbena (bass), Olga (piano/keyboards), and Elvira (guitars and songwriter) - replacing Lydia that left the band in 2006. They described their music as 'Dramatic Metal'.Aina seriously decided to found a band and soon she met Lydia that was a student at Drama school. That meeting was fateful. Lydia grew up in an atmosphere of musical theatre with its amazing art of actors, classical music, ancient operatic arias and exciting performances. That's why she offered to create something intertwining drama with metal sound. Her offer was met with great pleasure, as Aina already became the disciple of the musical theatre's singer and fell in love with drama too. So, the band named Blackthorn exists since the 31st night of October (2004). Verbena joined the other members shortly after as the bass-guitarist. She has had a friendly relationship with Lydia since their childhood. In winter 2006 piano-player Olga, an old friend of Verbena, supplemented the Blackthorn Alliance as the keyboardist. Afterwards Lydia gave birth to a baby and leave the band. The new guitarist Elvira joined Blackthorn in 2006, following the departure of Lydia. Behold! Their Dark Performance just begins |
 | Blackthorn Stick/Swallowtail Jig/Swallowtail Reel Bb tin whistle & sofa. I was too close to the camera and there was a moment of confussion when my mother came in and danced. I'm bored so I'll comment about the tunes: -I had a piece of the first jig in my mind, so I searched for it with the ABC searcher on TheSession.org . I found it and learned it. But I forgot about that "a" in bars 5 and 13. -A friend of mine told me she had just learned the Swallowtail, so I decided to re-learn it. But among other mistakes you can hear I start with "BEE GEE" most of the time instead of "GEE BEE". -Once I was listening to "The Late Session" on RTÉ.ie and I liked a set of tunes a fiddler, whose name I can't remember, was playing alone. So I transcribed the first tune. It happened to be the Swallowtail Reel in E Dorian, when that reel is normally played in A Dorian. So this is his setting, sorry for stealing it. |

"Blackthorn Stick", in the key of G, is also known as "Catholic Boys", "The Coach Road To Sligo", "The Humours Of Bantry", "The Robin's Nest" and "The Scotia Ree". It has been recorded by The Dubliners, The Bushwhackers Band, The Chieftains and a million other groups and fiddle players, all of whom play it a lot better than I do. "Rakes of Kildare" is also known as "Fagamaoid Súd Mar Atá Sé", "Jim McBride's", "Leave That As It Is", "The Old Barn Door" and "Thank God We're Surrounded By Water". This tune is used for two songs I have uploaded - "The Limerick Rake" and Ewan Macoll's "I'm Champion at Keepin' 'Em Rolling". Have a listen to them. They sound better than my scratchy fiddle-playing. |
