'Sinoxenic languages' are those other than the
Chinese dialects which have adopted
Chinese characters, or sinograph, (and with it a large number of
loanwords), regardless of whether or not they still use Chinese characters at present. The three major Sinoxenic languages are
Japanese,
Korean and
Vietnamese. The term does not imply any genetic affiliation with Chinese. Some
ethnic minorities in China, like the
Zhuang and the
Bai, also adopted Chinese characters for their use.
