Description

The term 'single track' is used to describe a type of mountain biking trail. The essential feature of single track is that it is narrow. In addition it is frequently smooth and flowing, but it may also exhibit technical rocky sections and may be criss-crossed with tree roots. Single track can be ridden 'up' or 'down' - however it is most popularly ridden downwards as this is faster. Single track contrasts with double track or fire road which is wide enough for four-wheeled off-road vehicles.
Single track riding can be quite challenging from a technical standpoint, because small errors in riding can cast you off the trail into unrideable terrain.
The two words of the term are often conjoined as a single word 'singletrack'.
