The 'Singapore History Museum' (
abbreviation: SHM;
Chinese: 新加坡历史博物馆) was the name for the
National Museum of Singapore from
1993 to
2006. The museum was one of the three national
museums of
Singapore, and was housed at the
National Museum Building till
2003 and later at
Riverside Point until
2006. The museum houses
Singapore artifacts, photos and
replicas of
Singapore's history. Its original and permanent location is at
Stamford Road, which was closed on
28 April 2003 for major upgrading works and to build a new wing on the old Drama Centre site. The building will be completed in
2006 and re-open as the
National Museum of Singapore, its former name adopted in
1965 and used till
1993.
There was a permanent exhibition at
Riverside Point, known as "Rivertales", the exhibition started from
28 August 2003 and ended on
6 March 2006 to prepare for the move back to
Stamford Road when it reopens in
December 2006.
New building
There will be new exhibitions and displays when the new museum reopens at Stamford Road in
2006. There will also be a lecture theatre, an education and resource centre as well as cafes, restaurants and a museum shop. The building will retain the original architecture with the new facilities and exhibitions are accessible to all members of the public. The museum will have
escalators and
lifts.
The museum will have activities all year round besides the exhibiton programme for all ages. It will be working with the public and private bodies to have a larger number of visitors to the museum. Another new feature will be a 230 seat "black box"" auditorium for lectures, screenings and performances. There will be also an education centre and seminar rooms for life-long learning for visitors.
