Pavlik Morozov's official status was 'Hero-Pioneer of the Soviet Union Number 001'. Pavlik was a truth-lover. In 1932, when he was 12 years old, he informed on his own father to the Secret Police for stealing grain. Six months later Pavlik was murdered in a silver birch forest by his grandfather. Pavlik was turned into a national hero to encourage all Soviet children that their first loyalty should be to the State, not the family. National songs, epic poems, fairy tales, operas and films were commissioned to glorify him. Schools, parks, clubs and statues were erected in his honour. He became the immortal leader of the Young Pioneer Movement. Then, when the Soviet Union collapsed in the 1990's, Pavlik's status came under question: is he a hero or is he actually a traitor boy? Even today, people are arguing if in fact he ever did the thing that he is famous for - denouncing his own father. With suspense and irony this film moves from the grandeur of Moscow to the remote beauty of a Siberian village. Through the destruction of traditional morality and the creation of Communism to the resurrection of the Church and the rise of capitalism in Russia today. If political power can be created using great propaganda, Boy Hero 001 reveals one of the most successful, and cynical attempts to mould children into the 'perfect citizens'. Perhaps the most terrifying aspect of this film is the haunting feeling that the image of a child martyred for his dedication to the state is more powerful than anything he could have been lined up for in life.
