is a
city located in the soutwestern part of
Kōchi,
Japan. The city was formed on
April 10,
2005 from the merger of the city of
Nakamura and the village of
Nishitosa from
Hata District.
Shimanto is located on the Shimanto River, considered one of the cleanest and most beautiful rivers in Japan. The residents speak a distinct dialect of Japanese known as Hata-ben.
As of October 1, 2004, the city has an estimated
population of 37,903 and a
density of 59.93 persons per
km². The total area is 632.50 km².
