SESTO SAN GIOVANNI
'Sesto San Giovanni' is a city in Lombardy, Italy, part of the province of Milan.
An unrelevant agglomerate of building until the 1800s, Sesto San Giovanni grew during the end of the 19th century and in the early 1900s, becoming the site of several industries, such as Falck, Campari, Marelli and Breda. In that period the population increased rapidly, from 5,000 inhabitants in 1880 to 14,000 in 1911. After the World War II, Sesto become populated by many migrants from southern Italy, leading to an increase to 95,000 inhabitants in 1981. Sesto has been known for a long time as the Stalingrad of Italy, because of the strong historical presence of PCI, the Italian communist party, which gave the city all its majors.
Because of its diverse and growing industries, the Milan suburb has drawn many migrants. Some 9.52% of the population are not Italian, of which 2.97% of the population are North African Arab, 2.06% are other Europeans, and 1.90% are from the Asian continent.[2]
In the 1990s, Sesto San Giovanni suffered an economical crisis, and all the historical companies closed their offices in the city. The town partially succedeed in reconverting its economy from producing steel to other activities, avoiding the fate of other steel-producing towns, such as Sheffield, England and Flint, Michigan . Unemployment is low, because some large companies opened offices in Sesto, such as ABB Group, Wind, Impregilo and Oracle Corporation.
