Seal hunting or sealing
Seal hunting or sealing is the personal or commercial hunting of seals. Long prized for their hide and as a food source by indigenous societies, seals were severely diminished in numbers once commercial sealing became a major industry. They are still hunted today, though regulations are comparatively strict, and the images from seal hunts have become famous symbols for conservation and animal cruelty activists.
Bloody Ice 2: Seal Hunt 2007
This is sort of a sequel to the first bloody ice. Please consider this that you live in the US don't buy seafood from Canada, at least till the seal hunting is over! I have nothing against Canada just that I hate this horrible seal hunting.

Female Grey Seal (Hunting Mackerel) - Saco River
Wow, I've seen some cool wildlife outside my window, but this footage is my favorite. I have seen seals before, but if I am lucky they stick around for a few minutes. This Female Gray Seal came up river as the tide was headed out. She stuck around and caught a few fish over the course of a half-hour! There is a waterfall just up river from where these scenes were shot. As the water level drops a large amount of rocks emerge and block the fish into this deep pocket in the river between the mills of Factory Island, Saco (where I live) and Biddeford. Take a look at the Location of the video and the satellite view will explain the Seal's strategy in hunting fish. Also take a look at "catch and release" and you'll see in addition to the Mackerel you see in this video, there are large Striped Bass in this stretch of river. Also Herrings, Alewives, Salmon and Shad. This is follow-up to "Seal In The Saco River" when a Harbor Seal paid a visit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cu3m8aDJoCw As I was shooting the video, Jenny (aka: Dr. Flint) called her mom, who lives in the same building as I do to tell her there was a Seal in the river. She can be heard providing play by play.
Stop the seal hunt!Warning:Graphic
This is about the cruel'blood sport' seal hunting!Warning:Very graphic!Stop The Canadian Seal Hunt! The Canadian government has been ruthless in this regard, and so, we must hit them in their pockets! Independent vets who studied the seal hunt found that in 42 percent of the cases, the seals had been skinned while conscious. There is no market for seal meat, but there is a market for Canadian shell fish. The bulk of Canadian seafood—an estimated 75% of it—is exported to the United States, generating more than $3 billion (CAD) annually for the Canadian economy. In contrast, the seal hunt provides only a few million dollars each year to Canada. Restaurants such as Red Lobster must be boycotted! A Senate resolution (S. Res. 118), sponsored by Sens. Carl Levin (D-MI), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Joseph Biden (D-DE), is calling on the Canadian government to end the brutal and senseless seal hunt. Please ask your senators to co-sponsor S. Res. 118. http://community.hsus.org/campaign/US_2007_seal_resolution

Canadian Seal Hunt Defended
And Canadian seal hunters are preparing for the next stage of the seal hunt which begins today. One hunter defends his job and discusses the hunt, the pressure, and the controversy. The Canadian government promised this year's hunt would be more humane. It's allowing hunters to kill up to 275,000 young harp seals on the ice floes off Eastern Canada. Anti-sealing groups complained they have not been allowed to observe the hunt. They say the government's new killing procedures, intended to ensure a swift death, were not likely to be more humane. After a hunter shoots or clubs a seal, he now must check its eyes to see if it's dead, and if not, the animal's main arteries must be cut. The hunt always prompts a debate between those who say it is cruel and unsustainable, and those who say it is a legitimate harvesting of a small portion, of the 5.5 million-strong seal herd. Jim Dobbin hunts seals and says this is a tradition that has been going on for hundreds of years and was no different than hunting any other animal. [Jim Dobbin, Seal Hunter]: "The money is good and it's the same thing as killing a fish or gutting a fish, no difference." Dobbin also said animal rights groups were not basing their arguments on facts. [Jim Dobbin, Seal Hunter]: "I mean it definitely not facts or based on any kind of facts, I mean they are just going out and getting a few pictures of seals with blood on ice, it looks horrendous, and I guarantee you no hunt or no animal being killed is very pretty to look at , at no time, let alone on ice with background." The furs from the seals are made into coats and other clothes, and there is a growing market for seal oil, high in omega-3 fatty acid.
