The 'Samoan Islands' or 'Samoa Islands' (formerly referred to as 'Navigators' Islands') is an archipelago covering 3,030 sq km in the central South Pacific, forming part of the Polynesia region. Its population is approximately 250,000 persons but Politically, there are two jurisdictions on the islands:

Samoa, a state also called Western Samoa or Independent Samoa (2,831 sq km and 185,000 inhabitants)

American Samoa, a territory of the United States, also called Eastern Samoa (199 sq km and 65,000 inhabitants)
