SãO GABRIEL DA CACHOEIRA


'São Gabriel da Cachoeira' is a Brazilian city, located on the shores of the Rio Negro River, in the region of Cabeça do Cachorro, Amazonas state. Most of its inhabitants are indigenous people. Its population was 34,070 (2005) and its area is 109,185 km²[1].
In 2003, Nheengatu became an official language along with Portuguese in São Gabriel da Cachoeira.[2]
In 2006, an ambitious government project aimed to turn the city into a large tourist center, with three thematic hotels, with ethnic, culture and eco resorts.
