ROSE'S LIME JUICE

'Rose's lime juice', often known simply as "Rose's", is a brand of sweetened lime juice used in mixed drinks, most notably the Gimlet. It is made by the British company L. Rose & Co. (founded 1865), and distributed by Mott's in the United States.
It is an easy and preservable substitute to sweet and sour, a cocktail ingredient made by mixing lemon or lime juice with sugar cane syrup or sugar syrup in equal parts.
Lauchlin Rose patented the method used to preserve citrus juice without alcohol in 1867. The Merchant Shipping Act of that same year (1867) required all ships of the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy to provide a daily lime ration to sailors to prevent scurvy making the product nearly ubiquitous; thus the origin of the epithet limey.
Other products sold under the Rose's name are grenadine and a non-alcoholic triple sec.
Note that since Rose's lime juice is sweetened, it should not be used as a substitute for lime juice in recipes that do not include sugar (notably margaritas).
