ROGER WILLIAMS PARK

'Roger Williams Park' in southern Providence, Rhode Island is a 450-acre city park containing the city's zoo. It is named after the founder of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Roger Williams. The park also contains seven lakes which comprise approximately 98 acres. It is located in the southernmost part of the city bordering Cranston, RI. The park was designed by Horace Cleveland in 1878, and was constructed in the 1880s. Many of the roads and bridges were built by the Works Progress Administration from 1935 to 1938. Currently it contains a botanical center, Providence Police Department's Mounted Command center, A Japanese garden, boat rentals and historical tours, large greenspace, and many walking paths.
