:''Not to be confused with
Riverside International Raceway, a former road course in California.''
'Riverside Speedway' is a 1/3 mile, high banked, asphalt short track located about ten
kilometers outside of
Antigonish, Nova Scotia in
James River.
History
Riverside Speedway opened in
1969 under the ownership of
Antigonish businessman
John Chisholm. The track has attracted some big names in racing, such as
Benny Parsons and
Kevin Lepage, and was once a venue for the
NASCAR Busch East Series. Chisholm sold the track to local resident
Derek Vandalin in the
1980s. Vandalin owned the track until his death in
2005, at which point John Chisholm bought it back.
Upon regaining ownership of the track, Chisholm began a major renovation project. The renovation consisted of repaving the entire track, replacing the metal
guardrails with concrete walls, rebuilding and enlarging the
grandstands, and constructing a new
press box with
VIP seating. The restroom facilities were completely rebuilt, the sound and lighting systems were replaced, an electronic
scoreboard was installed, and the parking and campground capacity was increased.
In
2006, the track hosted two
CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour races and a
PASS North Super Late Model race. The
2007 schedule includes three 100 lap CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour races, a 250 lap PASS North race, and a 300 lap
NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race.
