'Rione' (plural: ''rioni'') is the name given to a ward in several Italian cities, the best-known of which is Rome. Unlike a ''quartiere'', a ''rione'' is usually an official administrative subdivision. The word derives from the Latin ''regio'' (the genitive ''regionis'' accounting for the ''n'').
