The name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Rindal (Norse ''Rinnudalr''), since the first church was built there. The first element is the genitive case of the rivername ''Rinna'', the last element is ''dalr'' m 'valley, dale'. The rivername is derived from the verb ''rinna'' 'run, flow'.
Until 1918 the name was written ''Rindalen''.

Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1989). It shows the club of a chairman. It is meant to represent John Neergaard, the founder of Formannskapslovene, who was from Rindal.
