'Rindal' is a
municipality in the
county of
Møre og Romsdal,
Norway.
Rindal was separated from
Surnadal 1858.
The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Rindal (
Norse ''Rinnudalr''), since the first church was built there. The first element is the genitive case of the rivername ''Rinna'', the last element is ''dalr'' m 'valley, dale'. The rivername is derived from the verb ''rinna'' 'run, flow'.
Until 1918 the name was written ''Rindalen''.
Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1989). It shows the club of a chairman. It is meant to represent
John Neergaard, the founder of
Formannskapslovene, who was from Rindal.
