'Riccardo Zanella' (
1875 -
30 March 1959) was the last elected president of the short lived
Free State of Fiume. His served in office from
5 October,
1921 until to
4 March,
1922 when his term was cut short due to Italian occupation. Italy formally annexed the territory on
16 March,
1924. Following
World War II Zanella demanded the restoration of the Free State as a sovereign entity, but failed to receive great powers support for his idea.
