This is where you will find that massive art deco tower structure featured in many movies, broadcasts, et all. The Civic Center District is also home to many major cultural centers, such as, The Ahmansen Theater, the Dorothy Chandler Theater, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. With their innovative and artistic architectures, their many sculptures, fountains, and works of art, all surrounded by a mesmerizing vista of the large downtown buildings, this area, is truly a monument to art itself. ![]() | LA China Town - shootingstar - shootingstarproductions Los Angeles, like any of the moderately to large towns West of the Mississippi, was settled during the great Western Migration. Because of this, a great many Chinese immigrants came to these forming population centers as well. The West coast, as such, has a proliferation of "China Town Districts", as a result of this migratory history. Los Angeles is no exception. Los Angeles has a very large, vibrant, varied and OLD China town district, with many delights for young and old. This documentary is on, the China Town District of Los Angeles, and, the original street of Los Angeles, which is called Olivera Street, or "Le Pueblo De Los Angeles", The village of the Angels. Strange as it may seem to some, The Spanish and Mexican immigrants who originally founded and settled Los Pueblos De Los Angeles, lived side by side with the Chinese Immigrants, next door neighbors in fact. So it is no accident, that the modern day China Town District, and the original Spanish Settlement, of Los Angeles, are parked right next to each other in this most remarkable of cities. Please do enjoy my gift to all of you. All photographs and images used in this publication are copyrighted by David Lee Frater, 2008. ![]() | Off Hollywood - shootingstar - shootingstarproductions Everyone knows about Hollywood, but few people ever wander more than a couple streets away from the boulevard, in any direction. To the locals that live here, those places sometimes only a few paces from the "main drag" are what we refer to as "Off Hollywood". In this slide show essay, we start out at the great library with its marble pillars, columns, chandeliers, sculptures, frescoes, and art... Then we move west and north, to the Greek Theater, then, South a bit, to Barnsdall Park, which is a historical reserve, preserving the Barnsdall Mansion, which sits atop a hill, just opposite of the great observatory. That mansion was designed by the great Frank Lloyd Wright, and is a national treasure, not just a treasure to the locals here. The Barnsdall park complex also houses a major museum, and many classrooms and work shops dedicated to teaching the arts to anyone who cares to attend a class there. Onward from there, a bit west, and a bit north, to the Hollywood Bowl, and then, downward, south, to end up at the Kodak Theater plaza to watch a few kids playing in a fountain. ![]() | Griffith Park - shootingstar - shootingstarproductions This photo essay is a day trip slide show showing a day, leaving the greater downtown Los Angeles area, where I live, a bus trip and a subway ride to the greater Hollywood area, on to Griffith Park, and the Griffith Park Observatory, called by some, The Mount Wilson Observatory. I think you will find this to be a very interesting photo essay, showing, just how lovely Los Angeles can be, in the eyes of some, just how beautiful the landscaping and natural wonders of Griffith Park really are. For those of you who are not familiar with Griffith Park, it is more, much, much more, than just a mere inner city park. It is a National Reserve as well, Part of the Angeles National Forest Preserve, which covers tens of thousands of acres. The park begins in the Hollywood Hills, on what is now, some of the most valuable land in the world, and is a National Reserve. Nobody can build on this space, it is protected, and is, the only example of a National Reserve, which touches and goes into the boundaries of, a major U.S. City. In addition to this incredible park, there is a major Observatory Complex on the peak of Mount Wilson, near the city as well. This essay, documents the hike, up the broad hiking trails/fire roads, to the Observatory, the complex itself, the views from the top, and the network of hiking trails surrounding the Observatory. Please do ENJOY this most lovely of photo essays. Gratitude is expressed to the following persons for allowing me to use their works as background music to this production. Gabby Pahinui & Sons of Hawaii, for the song "Ka Ua Loko". Melanie Safka, for the song "Baby Day". And... Donovan Leech, for the song "There is a Mountain". ![]() | Venice Beach - shootingstar - shootingstarproductions Venice Beach is the incarnation of what people usually think of when they think of a classic Southern California Beach. Crass, brash, the home of the wild, uncontrolled and daring misfits, youths, and the free spirited of all ages. It is all of that and more. A haven for the homeless, and why not? If you were homeless wouldn't you prefer to sleep out on a tropical beach and not some inner city slum? The gut reality of Venice Beach contrasts sharply to it's next door neighbor, Santa Monica Beach, which is decidedly upscale, refined, and a great deal more pricey as well. This photo essay takes you from the southern most tip of the boardwalk, to it's northern most tip, where the Venice Beach Boardwalk ends, and Santa Monica Begins. All photographs and images used in this set are copyright protected by, David Lee Frater, 2008. Gratitude is expressed to the following artists for allowing use of their work as background music to this production: David Essex for his song; "Rock On" Melanie Safka for her song; "Nickle Song" And lastly, the Dell Vikings, for their song; "Come go with me" Special accommodation, reverence, and admiration is also expressed to one of the greatest mural artists of our time, one Mr. Rip Cronk. His work adorns not only the streets and byways of Venice Beach, but cities WORLDWIDE. Many and numerous examples of his work are portrayed here. But more importantly, the images of his work that dwells forever within the hearts of all free spirited persons, however young or old they may be. His special gift, to all of the world MUST be understood and praised. Rarely does this world witness an artist of such talent, with a heart, who also has a deep social conscience as well. Rip Cronk, is just such a very special and precious artist, in the tradition of world class artists such as Michaelangelo, Leonardo DaVinci, La Trek, and a long line of may others in his company. May God bless and keep Mr. Cronks' work alive and well in the hearts and souls of all future generations yet to be born. ![]() | Hollywood Day Trip-01 - shootingstar - shootingstarproductions Hollywood Day Trip Part 01 This is my fourth installment on my "Out And About" series. This time, it's a day trip to the famous, and infamous Hollywood Area. Naturally, I visit "The Boulevard", with all it's glitz, tinsel, charm, and fakery. But also, I delve behind the scenes, to those enclaves rarely visited by most tourists, not included on any tour guides, such as Hollywood High School, where, legend has it, Marilyn Monroe, was discovered, while sitting on the steps. Also, in this town of glamor, fame, and thousands of famous names set with bronze letters into marble stars in polished granite sidewalks, there are only seven statues of actual stars in Hollywood at all. Only four of which are on Hollywood Boulevard, in a very artistic, gleaming chrome gazebo, on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard, and Las Palmas Avenue, where the business district of Hollywood Boulevard ends, and the residential area begins. That gazebo, has four bigger than life chrome statues, of four great ladies of the silver screen, holding up the roof of the gazebo, upon their heads. Two of the seven statues are in a park, a few blocks south of Hollywood Boulevard, "DeLongpre Park", both of those statues are to Rudolf Valentino. The 7th and last statue, is actually in the Hollywood Hills, in the Griffith Park reserve, overlooking Hollywood. It is in the courtyard, atop Mount Wilson, of the Griffith Park Observatory, also known as the Mount Wilson Observatory. This last statue is a bust, of James Dean. And I had to start again, with just my children and my wife. I'd thank my lucky stars, to be livin here today. 'Cause the flag still stands for freedom, and they can't take that away. And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free. And I wont forget the men who died, who gave that right to me. And I gladly stand up, next to you and defend her still today. 'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land, God bless the USA. From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee. Across the plains of Texas, From sea to shining sea. From Detroit down to Houston, and New York to L.A. Well there's pride in every American heart, and its time we stand and say. That I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free. And I wont forget the men who died, who gave that right to me. And I gladly stand up, next to you and defend her still today. 'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land, God bless the USA. And I'm proud to be and American, where at least I know I'm free. And I wont forget the men who died, who gave that right to me. And I gladly stand up, next to you and defend her still today. 'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land, God bless the USA. ....JAH Bless d WWW. Amen! |
