In simplified terms it could be described as a desperate revolt of a "protesting party" against economic deception and political autocracy. Terms "democratic revolution" on the one side and "communist revolt" on the other, do not seem adequate. National revolt in Albania, at the time the authorities refused to listen or see, while the opposition was incapable of leading a process which later slipped out of control, was leading to anarchy. The "Albanian anarchy" - might be to most precise term for what happened in this country. |

Heading for the Colombian border: Venezuela has begun mobilising its forces by air, land and sea. Ten tank battalions are on their way to the frontier - fuelling fears that the crisis could spark a regional war. Colombia raided neighbouring Ecuador to kill leftist guerrillas - a move condemned by most Latin American governments, and one which pushed Venezuela into action. Ecuador's demanded an apology - but Columbia claims the rebels were trying to make a uranium 'dirty bomb'. |

 | Oct 27: New York Regional March for Peace Led by vets, military families, union members, and students, 45,000 people from throughout New York City, New York State and northern New Jersey, marched despite the rain to make their call to bring the troops home now and for no war on Iran heard loud and clear through the streets of Manhattan. The march was part of a National Day of Action Against the Iraq War, initiated by United for Peace and Justice, the largest grassroots anti-war coalition in the U.S. Ten other regional demonstrations were held in Boston, Chicago, Jonesborough, Tenn., Los Angeles, New Orleans, Orlando, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Seattle.  | Iraq Debate: Closing argument, Chas Freeman If we continue with our current policy in Iraq, there will continue to be ethnic cleansing and displacement of Iraqi civilians, death of American troops, and a decline in America's leadership internationally and our ability to deal with threats elsewhere. We will continue to feed hatred that will increase American enemies. If, however, we can play on the fears of Iraq's neighbors that they might be dragged into a larger regional war if we withdraw, or implicated in the anarchy that will result in Iraq, then we will have a basis to conduct a regional deal that allows us to leave Iraq with some honor. The biggest losers in that case would be al Qaida, its recruitment efforts, and Iran. |
