Looking out over the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool towards the Washington Monument
'Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool' is perhaps the best known of
Washington, D.C.'s reflecting pools. Located directly east of the
Lincoln Memorial, it is the long, rectangular pool most often seen in photographs of the
Washington Monument.
Located on the west end of the
National Mall, the reflecting pool is approximately 2,029
feet (618
m) long and 167 feet (51 m) wide. It has a depth of approximately 18
inches (46
cm) on the sides and 30 inches (76 cm) in the center. It holds approximately 6,750,000 U.S.
gallons (25,500,000
L) of water.
The
Capitol Reflection Pool is located directly west of the
U.S. Capitol Building, at the east end of the National Mall. Located nearby is the
Ulysses S. Grant Memorial, which represents the Union victory that
General Grant engineered during the
Civil War.
This pool has been used extensively in popular culture, such as in the ''
South Park'' episode "
Super Best Friends", and a scene in the film
Forrest Gump.
