![]() | CORE 2008 : Rail : Core of Integrated Transport Conference on Railway Engineering CORE 2008 Rail - The Core of Integrated Transport *** Message from the Conference Chair In 2008, the Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA) will be hosting its biennial Conference on Railway Engineering (CORE), a major event on the rail industry calendar. The conference theme, RAIL -- THE CORE OF INTEGRATED TRANSPORT, will highlight the successful role of rail in integrated transport systems in both urban travel & freight contexts. The conference theme puts the spotlight on freight and the role of rail as an integral & integrated component of the freight supply chain. In the context of urban travel, the theme will focus on the success of rail transport when an integrated land use & transport planning approach is adopted. The vibrant city of Perth has been chosen as the venue for CORE 2008 to showcase the unprecedented expansion of the city's urban rail network, & the major development of the north-west railway system in response to the world's increasing demand for iron ore. The conference organising committee is well advanced in planning for the conference, which will be held at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre. This modern state of the art facility will provide a magnificent venue for delegates, sponsors & exhibitors for both the technical & social components of the conference. A challenging technical program, complemented by technical tours, will focus on leading-edge technology & techniques that position rail at the forefront of the transport industry. Tours will include the rapidly expanding Northwest railways & the soon to be opened Perth to Mandurah urban railway. Sponsorship prospectuses sent recently to potential sponsors & exhibitors have achieved an excellent early response. ARTC; ARG, a QR Company; WestNet Rail & the Public Transport Authority of WA have already committed to the four Platinum level sponsorships. The conference technical committee issued the Call for Paper Abstracts on September 3 & is expecting a strong response. The closing date for abstracts is 30 November 2007 and after the review of abstracts, it is planned that the Call for Papers will be open between 15th January & 28th April 2008 with delegate registrations open in late February 2008. As the conference date draws closer, the conference website will keep potential attendees up to date with progress. The website includes a video to provide a preview of the city of Perth, the conference itself, the conference venue & the technical tours. - John Goodall, Conference Chair *** CORE 2008 http://core2008.org Western Australia http://westernaustralia.net City of Perth http://perth.wa.gov.au Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre http://www.pcec.com.au |
![]() | Ha Noi Light Rail Transit System VIETNAM - FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR HANOI TRAMWAY, PHASE 2 Following an initial contract won in 2004 to carry out a feasibility study for a pilot tramway line in the Vietnamese capital, in April 2005 SYSTRA was selected by the People's Committee of Hanoi and the French authorities to conduct further investigations into certain aspects of the 2004 study. The aim of this work is to enable the launch of a project which can be implemented by 2010, the date of the 1000th anniversary of the founding of Hanoi city. On the basis of the route defined in December 2004, linking the western suburbs with the city centre, the study aims to provide a cost comparison of the various options for installation and systems (tramway or light metro) and to provide additional details about the geological feasibility of underground works, the design of transport hubs connecting the various public transport projects which are eventually planned, and to provide an in-depth analysis of the way the project will be financed. This information should enable the Vietnamese and French authorities to specify their level of financial participation in autumn 2005. The study is financed from FASEP funds at a cost of ?600 K and will last 6 months. The work will be carried out by a multidisciplinary team made up of 10 experts from different departments of SYSTRA (PLT, GCOA, and EST). For the financial part of the study, SYSTRA has teamed up with Dexia Bank, which specializes in organizing investment for transport projects in developing countries. The findings of the study will be presented at the end of September 2005 at a Franco-Vietnamese conference. This should enable the tender for the construction contract to be launched during the course of 2006. Source: http://www.systra.com/en/news/news0061.htm |

![]() | Taking the Fast Train to China - Shanghai to Xuzhou "All The Way To China" Video diary of my first high-speed train ride into China going from Shanghai to Xuzhou and back. The maximum speed of this train traveled at 250 Km/Hr. It was an amazingly smooth ride. According to Wikipedia: Rail transport is the most commonly used mode of long-distance transportation in the People's Republic of China. Almost all rail operations in Mainland China are handled by the Ministry of Railways, which is part of the State Council of the People's Republic of China. The rail network traverses the length and breadth of the country, covering a total length of 76,000 kilometres (45,600 mi), making only the rail networks in the United States and Russia larger in size. The network today serves all provinces with the exception of Macau. Rail is one of the principal means of transport in Mainland China, with over 1.3 billion railway trips taken in 2007 and 1.4 billion estimated for 2008. Train speed limits China has increased the allowed top speed for trains six times: in April 1997, October 1998, October 2000, November 2001, April 2004, and April 18, 2007. In the 1997 speedup, the top speed of passenger trains on some of the main lines was increased to 140 km/h. During the following speedups top speeds were increased to 160 km/h on some lines and up to 250 km/h. During the 2007 speedup, the top speeds reached 200 km/h on 6,003 km tracks of main lines such as Jinghu Railway, Jingha Railway, and Jingguang Railway. On 848 km tracks the top speeds reached 250 km/h, most of which were on the Qinshen Passenger Railway. Another 14,000 km tracks had a top speed limit of 160 km/h and an extra 22,000 km tracks had a 120 km/h limit. In addition, during this speedup, the heavy-haul freight transportation speed limit was also boosted to 120 km/h. This speedup was expected to boost passenger and cargo capacity by 18 percent and 12 percent respectively. |
